5 Ways To Make Your Dreams Come True Without Taking On A Day Job

how to make your dreams come true

By: Sean P Bennett

Anyone pursuing a career in acting, singing, or the arts needs a flexible schedule to go on auditions.  Thankfully, you CAN make your dreams come true without having to work a full time job!

Although a day job means security, it may also mean little flexibility. You may just want to add extra income at night or on the weekends. Freelance can be your best option.

Good News.

There is no need to buckle down under a full time job. You can earn from 15 up to 200 dollars an hour doing fun and flexible work such as: promotions, clowning, dancing, focus groups, and seasonal employment.

And, while these gigs won’t make your rich, hopefully they’ll give you the freedom you need to make your dreams come true and become rich in the process.

“Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.”

Thomas Edison

However, on your journey to freedom and personal happiness there is some bad news. Freelance offers little security.

But still, you can make your dreams come true: you’ll just need to get your own medical insurance in exchange for being your own boss and setting your own schedule. Are you a risk taker?  If not, just get some extra money for some extra fun in your life. Being open to a variety of non- conventional jobs can help you choose jobs that please you and fit your personality.

Below is a list of flexible career options that I have profited from and know have worked for other freelancers. You can mix and match freelance jobs to suit your needs.  This article covers the basics to inspire you to explore your options and full potential. These jobs won’t make you rich but they’ll let you pursue your dreams so you can become rich if that’s what you’d like to do!

Purposely excluded from this article are the most common freelance jobs: cater- waiter and temp work…but those are still options.

This article explores work that will use your talents and personality to make money.

So, let’s begin.

Here are 5 ways to make your dreams come true without taking on a day job:

1) Promotional work is a way to earn 15-100 an hour by: smiling, handing out fliers, giving information, being a costume character, product specialist and or just being eye candy. Promotions take place on the street, at concerts/events, in convention centers and offer opportunities to travel the country for free.  They’re a great way to earn some extra cash to help you make your bigger dreams come true.

A promotion can last one day or include a 3 month tour.  You can be paid generous money to work trade shows or less money for guerrilla street teams.  Alcohol promotions are a great way to meet people and earn easy cash. A new popular job is hosting speed dating events in NYC. If you are under 30, and a good looking guy or girl, it is time to google search promotional agencies. One of the first companies I worked with was: Convention Models and Talent Agency.

2) Focus Groups are paid discussion groups held to help the marketing of a new or improved product.  Where else can you get paid for having an opinion? You will be paid anywhere from $50-$250 dollars for sharing your opinion on products ranging from cell phones to alcohol. Another great way to make your dreams come true by getting some extra cash as you further pursue your additional goals.

These focus group discussions vary in length, from on to two hours, and you are compensated accordingly. You can register online and you will be contacted when you fit a needed demographic for product research.

Time to research focus groups. I regularly book focus groups with the murray hill center.  Register with focus groups online.

3) Dancing your way to success. Are you a dancer or an actor who moves well? You can earn money dancing at corporate parties/family functions (Christmas parties, bar mitzvahs) as a motivational dancer with even more opportunities for free travel.  Earn 100-200 dollars, for just 4-6 hours of work.

Whew!

How much can that give you some breathing room for making your artistic (or other) dreams come true? Again, it’s not how you become rich but it can certainly help you pursue your bigger goals.

After performing some basic choreography, you are encouraged to dance with the party guests on the main dance floor.  For over 30 years, Chazzam has been booking performers for events.  You can find out more at:

Freelancer Shannon Moore has become an expert at being paid to dance in

“Flashmobs.

She says: “The Flashmob jobs are my favorite. They usually involve a day of rehearsel before the “big surprise.” For flashmob jobs, I get to play different characters such as: a waiter, party guest, and even a bride. These jobs are fun and lucrative. It is even hard to imagine it is a job. These types of jobs help me pursue my goals. I have been Coupon Suzy in national commercials for the past four years and danced in national commercials and feature films such as: “Enchanted.”

4) Clowning Around

Do you like to work with kids? Are you great with your hands and great with make up? To be a clown, you need a basic skill set. Clown work for parties will include balloon twisting and face painting paying 50-200 per hour. What a super-fun way to work a side job to make your dreams come true! This isn’t how you become rich, but hey it’s a start!

Freelancer and clown Bettina Skye says: “It is freelance and on the weekends. The pay is good and I am not stuck doing the same thing over and over again. Promotions, extra work, and clowning give me the flexibility to audition and shoot films. I was in a film called “Collar” playing Tom Sizemore’s wife. I just did my first horror film “Halloween:Obsession.” Facebook me for an invitation to the screening on Jan 3rd.”

Horizon Entertainment hires clowns. Check them out at:

5) Seasonal jobs

Tis the season. Lastly, there are seasonal freelance job opportunities. Macy’s Elf and Santa department hire annually for the holiday season. This job gave me a chance to perform for children. To get this gig, I had to take an elf drug test and have no criminal record. I guess there are some shady drug-addicted elves in the North Pole!

Anyway, I was hired for 15 dollars an hour to do the “warm up” for a children’s puppet show. Santa starts at 25 per hour. After one week of puppet warm-ups, I received some good news. Since elves qualify as Macy’s employees, I would receive a twenty percent employee discount, and on certain days forty to sixty percent off certain items in the store. My holiday shopping was suddenly at full speed ahead! Now that’s a dream come true :) …on my way to learning how to become rich already…LOL!

Anyway, I hope these ideas have started to spark your imagination while broadening your possibilities.

While these gigs won’t make you rich, hopefully they’ll give you the freedom you need to make your dreams come true and ultimately become rich in the process.
